Overview
Type 982
The 718 put the engine between the axles, concentrating mass at the centre of the car. The result was a chassis that rewarded precision over outright power. The 982 generation ran from 2016 until October 2025, when global production of all 718 Boxster and Cayman variants ended. European sales had already stopped in mid-2024 following new regulatory requirements.

Placing the engine ahead of the rear axle keeps the polar moment of inertia low. The car changes direction with less resistance and communicates the limit earlier.
Porsche has announced an electric successor to the 718 built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture. As of this writing it has been delayed beyond its original 2026 target. No verified production specification is available, so none is shown here.
